Privacy Policy

The short version
The JSON you paste into JSON Wrench is processed entirely in your browser. It is never uploaded to, stored on or seen by our servers or anyone else. We use Google Analytics to count visits, and it never receives your JSON. There are no accounts.
Your JSON
Formatting, validation, repair, minifying, unescaping and the tree view all run as code inside your browser. The text you paste or type is not sent over the network. JSON Wrench has no backend server that could receive it.
Data stored on your device
JSON Wrench uses your browser's local storage for two conveniences. This data stays on your device and is never sent to us:
- Recent history: your last 5 valid JSON documents, so you can reopen them from the Input menu. On a shared computer, clear it by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.
- Theme: whether you chose light, dark or system mode.
- Cookie choice: whether you accepted or rejected analytics cookies, so we don't ask again.
Shared links
When you press Share, your JSON is compressed into the part of the link after the #. Browsers do not send that part of a URL to the server, so we never receive it. Anyone who has the link can open the JSON, and the link may be saved wherever you paste it (chat apps, email, browser history), so do not share links containing secrets.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how many people visit and which pages they use. Google Analytics uses cookies (such as _ga) and may collect:
- the pages you visit and the page that referred you,
- your browser, device type, screen size and language,
- your approximate location (country and city), derived from your IP address,
- basic interactions such as page scrolls and clicks on outbound links,
- which tool buttons are used (Format, Minify, Fix, Tree, Share, Copy, Download). Only the button name is recorded, never the JSON.
Google Analytics does not receive the JSON you paste. We configure it so the page address it records leaves out the part after #, where shared links keep their JSON. Google processes this data under the Google Privacy Policy; see also how Google uses data from sites that use its services.
To opt out, choose Reject in Cookie settings, block cookies for this site in your browser, use a content blocker, or install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. JSON Wrench works the same with analytics blocked.
Cookie consent
In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, analytics and advertising cookies stay off until you accept them. We use Google Consent Mode: until you accept, Google tags set no cookies and send only cookieless signals without identifiers. You can change your choice at any time with Cookie settings in the footer of every page.
Elsewhere, analytics cookies are on by default and you can opt out with the options above or by rejecting them in Cookie settings.
Our use of Google Analytics data may include measuring the results of our own Google Ads campaigns, for example counting how many visitors from an ad go on to use the tool.
Hosting
The site is hosted on Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel processes technical information needed to deliver pages and protect against abuse, such as your IP address and browser user agent. See the Vercel Privacy Policy. Fonts are served from our own domain, so no requests go to font providers.
What we do not do
- We do not collect, read or store the JSON you paste.
- We do not have accounts, so we hold no names, emails or passwords.
- We do not sell or share personal data.
- We do not show advertising. If we add it in the future, this policy will be updated first.
Children
JSON Wrench is a developer tool and is not directed at children under 13.
Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU and UK, or the CCPA in California) you may have rights to access or delete personal data. We do not hold personal data that identifies you; analytics data is held by Google and can be avoided with the opt-out options above. For any request or question, contact us using the address below.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with an updated date.
